Discovering the Natural Wonders of South Iceland - Two day Itinerary
Nestled in the heart of the North Atlantic, Iceland is a land of breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders. The south of Iceland, in particular, is a region that captivates visitors with its powerful waterfalls, stunning black sand beaches, and otherworldly glacial landscapes. Join us on a journey through the enchanting wonders of Skogafoss, Kvernufoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrabui, Black Sand Beach, Diamond Beach, and Jokulsarlon Glacier. We covered these locations in two days with our rental car which I highly recommend to explore the South.
Day 1
Skogafoss: A Mighty Cascade
Our adventure begins with Skogafoss, one of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls. Thundering down from a height of 60 meters, Skogafoss is a mesmerizing sight and a photographer's dream. The mist created by the waterfall often forms rainbows on sunny days, adding to the enchantment of this natural wonder. Adventurous souls can climb the staircase alongside the falls for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
Kvernufoss: A Hidden Gem
Venture off the beaten path, and you'll discover Kvernufoss, a hidden gem tucked away in a secluded canyon. Unlike its more famous counterparts, Kvernufoss offers a more intimate and serene experience. The 30-meter high cascade is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a picturesque and tranquil escape.
Seljalandsfoss: Behind the Veil
Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall like no other. What sets it apart is the unique opportunity to walk behind the cascading water curtain, providing a truly immersive experience. Visiting during the midnight sun reveals an otherworldly glow, turning the falls into a magical spectacle. Be prepared to get a little wet but embrace the chance to see Seljalandsfoss from a perspective few ever experience.
Gljufrabui: The Hidden Beauty
Just a stone's throw away from Seljalandsfoss lies Gljufrabui, a hidden waterfall nestled within a narrow canyon. Accessible by wading through a shallow stream or navigating a rugged path, the reward is well worth the effort. Enclosed by high cliffs, Gljufrabui offers an intimate and mysterious atmosphere that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Waterproof jacket and footwear are a must.
Day 2
Black Sand Beach: Reynisfjara's Dramatic Shoreline
Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach near the village of Vik, is a dramatic stretch of coastline that showcases Iceland's raw beauty. Towering basalt columns rise from the sea, creating a surreal backdrop against the black sands. However, caution is advised as powerful waves and unpredictable currents make the beach both beautiful and dangerous.
Diamond Beach: Ice Sculptures on the Shore
Adjacent to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach is a surreal landscape where icebergs from the lagoon wash ashore, glistening like diamonds in the sunlight. The contrast of the crystal-clear ice against the black sand creates a scene straight out of a fantasy. Photographers will be in their element, capturing the play of light on these glacial sculptures.
Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon: Where Ice Meets Water
Our journey concludes at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, a stunning glacial lake dotted with icebergs that have broken free from the surrounding glacier. Boat tours offer an up-close encounter with these floating ice giants, providing a unique perspective on the glacial landscape. As the sun sets, the ice takes on hues of pink and orange, creating a magical atmosphere that lingers in the memory.
South Iceland is a land of contrasts and wonders, where powerful waterfalls, mystical hidden gems, black sand beaches, and glacial landscapes converge to create a truly magical experience. Whether you're an avid adventurer, nature lover, or photographer seeking the perfect shot, this region promises to leave an indelible mark on your soul.
