Packing for Iceland in September: Your Essential Guide
Iceland is a land of otherworldly beauty, with its stunning landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and rugged terrain. If you're planning a trip to this Nordic wonderland in mid-September, you're in for a treat. However, packing for Iceland in the fall can be a bit tricky, as the weather can be unpredictable. To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip, I've put together a comprehensive guide on what to pack for your mid-September adventure in Iceland. I also linked some of my Iceland picks at the bottom of this post.
Layered Clothing:
Iceland's weather in mid-September can be quite variable, with temperatures ranging from 40°F (5°C) to 55°F (13°C). The key to staying comfortable is to pack layers. Here's what you'll need:
Thermal base layers: Long-sleeve shirts and thermal leggings will keep you warm.
Mid-layers: Fleece jackets or sweaters provide insulation.
Waterproof and windproof outer layer: A quality waterproof jacket and pants are essential for protecting against the rain and wind.
A light weight puffer: worth it if visiting glaciers/ice caves
Bottoms:
Comfortable and durable pants: Opt for quick-drying, waterproof, or water-resistant pants, especially if you plan on hiking or exploring areas with wet conditions.
Jeans: Pack a pair for casual outings and dinners, but they might not be the best choice for long hikes and definitely not the warmest.
Warm leggings or sweats: for casual outings to keep your legs warm.
Footwear:
Waterproof hiking boots with good traction: Ensure your footwear can withstand rugged terrain and keep your feet dry. Linking the ones I wore here. They were perfect for all the different terrains.
Comfortable walking shoes: For city strolls or easy hikes.
Accessories:
Warm hats and gloves: Keep yourself warm during chilly days and evenings.
Neck gaiter: Protect your neck from the cold winds. Ditch the scarf as it will probably blow away.
Wool/hiking socks: Pack extra, more than usual in case they get wet.
Sunglasses: Shield your eyes from the intense sunlight that can occur even in fall.
Swimsuit: If you plan on visiting geothermal pools and hot springs.
Reusable water bottle: Tap water is safe to drink in Iceland, so you can refill your bottle to stay hydrated.
Waterproof phone case: Great for hot springs and walking behind waterfalls
Backpack:
A sturdy and waterproof daypack is essential for carrying your essentials and keeping them dry.
Electronic Gear:
Camera with extra batteries: Iceland is a photographer's paradise.
Power bank/charger: Keep your devices charged, especially when exploring remote areas
Plug adapters: Iceland uses Type F outlets (European standard), so make sure to pack the right adapter.
Toiletries:
Sunscreen: Even in September, the sun can be strong, and its rays can reflect off the glaciers and water.
Lip balm with SPF: Protect your lips from windburn.
Personal medication and first-aid kit: It's always a good idea to be prepared.
Maps and Guidebooks:
Download maps and navigation apps to help you get around.
Snacks:
High-energy snacks for hikes or long drives.
Money and Travel Documents:
Passport, visas, and driver's license (if needed).
Currency: Have some Icelandic Króna in cash for places that may not accept cards. However, most places take card. I mainly used my credit card.
Packing for Iceland in mid-September is all about versatility and being prepared for changing weather conditions. With the right clothing, gear, and a sense of adventure, you'll be ready to explore this enchanting destination. Remember to check the weather forecast and specific activities you plan to do. By following this packing guide, you'll ensure that your trip to Iceland is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. Enjoy your Icelandic adventure!
